Peer to Peer (P2P) technology emerges under the background that centralized systems gradually are evolving into distributed ones and spares no effort to make full use of network resources to complete calculation and content delivering. It resolves the performance and bandwidth bottlenecks of the traditional client/server architecture and has good scalability and high performance. However, it also has problems like network bandwidth consumption, credit, legal copyright and so forth. The peer nodes in P2P overlay network are dynamic, heterogeneous, and selfish and hence raised novel challenges. At present, the P2P overlay network technology mainly includes two types:structured and unstructured. Structured network can guarantee the accuracy of searching and low latency for data transmission, but limited scalability; unstructured network has good scalability and robustness, but long delay with data delivering. This paper focuses on combining advantages of the two kinds of structures in order to build efficient, highly scalable, robust P2P overlay network. The main contributions of this paper are:(1) we looked back to the development of P2P base on the general rule from centralization to the distribution and analyzed several typical P2P applications at detail.(2) By combing advantages of structured and unstructured P2P networks, we propose an improved approach of Strong-Node-Tree P2P overlay network which is a structured multicast tree as a whole, but each strong node is unstructured.(3) We gave a formal description of peer nodes, overlay network as well as data scheduling, meanwhile we designed and implemented a Gossip-based streaming media system.
