IEEE 802.16 standards, also known as WiMax, has been specifically designed to provide wireless last-mile broadband access in the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN),offering a high speed/capacity, low cost, and a scalable solution. IEEE 802.16 standards will be the foundation of MAN in the next few decades. There are several key problems which should be addressed promptly, during the wide application of the IEEE 802.16 Wireless MAN, such as how to guarantee the very diverse QoS requirements for all of different applications, how to schedule the packet and how to allocate the resource to optimize the performance of wireless network, etc.The main contributions of this thesis are that:1. An innovative integrated QoS architecture is proposed for IEEE 802.16 in PMP mode. The new integrated QoS architecture gives a mapping rule to provide cross layer QoS guarantee.2. An innovative scheme of bandwidth resource allocation is proposed for IEEE 802.16 Mesh mode centralized scheduling with a designed goal of achieving overall high traffic throughput in minimal scheduling time slots, and an algorithm of mini-slot allocation during frames is also proposed.
