EDGE just as its name implies Enhanced Datarate for GSMEvolution. Using EDGE technology, it can implement somefunction of 3G system on the frequency channel of 800,900,1800,1900MHz. EDGE can greatly improve GSM network service.It also provides wide area data communication service whichrate is 384kbps and local area data communication service whichrate is 2Mbps. Therefore EGDE can fulfill the need of futurewireless multimedia communication.EDGE is the evolution of GPRS system to 3G system, and isconsidered as solutions of migration from GSM network to 3Gnetwork. EDGE enable network service provider to make greatlyuse of the existing wireless network equipment to supplysubscriber with individual multimedia service before 3G systemis popular.EDGE makes better use of the existing GSM resource thanGPRS .It enables the existing equipments in GSM networkcontinuously to be used so that the investment in GSM systemis protected better.First, this paper referenced MOTOROLA equipment, and basedon GSR7 edition. Then, the feasibility and maneuverability ofthe EDGE are analyzed. Furthermore, the relative systemperformances are considered. According to the experience ofEDGE test network implementing in Tianjin mobile communicationcompany since the January of 2004, the author had researchedon the feasibility of using EDGE technology, dealt withdesigning and constructing of EDGE system, optimizing network,trouble-shooting and so on .In the period, I had studied theEDGE network performance and analyzed the relative technology,found a lot of problems in the practice network.
