As a important component for software testing, performance testing is critical for the development of WCDMA CS domain network equipments. This paper has briefly reviewed the current developments of WCDMA systems, analyzed the requirements of WCDMA CS domain network products for performance testing. Referring to the objects simulated and tested by WCDMA CS domain mass calling simulator, this paper discussed the network architecture of WCDMA system and the network element structures and their functions. Based on the needs of performance testing, this paper also analyzed the interface between testing object and testing tools--the signal procedures related to performance testing at the Iu-CS interface, including the mobility management, calling control, short message service and handover. This paper studied the key technique for realizing mass calling simulator based on WCDMA CS domain. According to the requirements of performance testing, this paper studied the abstract and simulation of UTRAN and UE at the Iu-CS interface, and simplified the protocols of the mobility management, calling control, short message service and of RANAP and IuUP. In concern of the complexity of the calling modes that may be adopted by performance testing, this paper also suggested a method to simulate complicated calling model via accumulation of simple uniform testcases, and also gave the specific structures of the testcases. Through practice, this paper also gave the module partition and the module design of mass calling simulator based on WCDMA CS domain, which include user interface module, test case management module, control plane protocol module and user plane protocol module. The descriptions of their functional structures and partition of sub-modules are also included. Further more, this paper analyzed the method of optimizing the simulator software effectiveness by directly sending and receiving data packet on Ethernet layer in avoidance of UDP/IP protocol. Finally, combined with practice, this paper introduced the running hardware of WCDMA CS domain mass calling simulator, stressed on the applications of mass calling simulator in practical performance testing using various examples, and testified the validity of the designed scheme.
