The deepening system reform and the accompanying competitions with the restructuring of electric power markets have made it a must for electric power enterprises to adopt automation and achieve sustainable development by upgrading the competitive edges. The efficient operation of electric power enterprises rely on complete, accurate, punctuate and consistent management of the bulky capitals, devicess, personnels and numerous datas. AM/FM/GIS system has implemented computational management of information on both the electric power equipments and users geographically, which integrates the electronic power equipments and the geographical environments. It also enables the users to browse the locations of electronic power equipments via computer screens and make decisions by means of CAI, thus realizing the goal of information share. Hence, the research and application of AM/FM/GIS system is of great significance with a broad application perspective.Design of AM/FM/GIS and its realization are studied in this paper. The proposed system, which combines the graphing and database techniques, is a computer application software system based on geographic information of the equipment and production management. Beginning with the introduction of GIS technique and the current development of AM/FM/GIS technique as well as reasons of the emergent needs for applying AM/FM/GIS by various levels of power supply sections in China, this paper stresses on the development of distributed AM/FM/GIS system in Wuhan Power Supply Bureau (WPSB) and manifests the necessity to develop this system in power supply industries. Furthermore, the object schemes, features and the operational process of key functions in AM/FM/GIS system are also presented in the paper. Meanwhile, studies are implimented in graphic data distribution settlement and database distribution realization based on the multi-layer service interconnections, with the illustration on key techniques concerning GIS sections, integral operation structures and connection sections. Finally, the integral effects of AM/FM/GIS system in practical application are summarized and prospected in view of some problemsdeserving special concern in the proposed system.The innovative features of the distributed AM/FM/GIS system design as well as its realization are studied in this paper. Firstly, the application of the proposed system in Wuhan Power Supply Bureau (WPSB), a mutifunctional complex which manipulate large-scale power grid and vast geographical territory and numberous production management departments, will serves as a representative example to meet the demand in production dispatch, routine management, power grid operation control and production process control. Besides, application of the distributed multi-layer configuration can disperse the load and enhance the of data processing capacity of the proposed system. Meanwhile, the expanding capacity, reliability and data security in the proposed system have enable it to promote the disposal ability of the whole system with additional servers flexibly. The distributed two-layer severs can operate independently from each other. Moreover, the data is duplicated and stored in N severs. Hence, the system can be recovered as long as one server works properly. It is demonstrated in practice that the AM/FM/GIS system with adopting the proposed structures and techniques mentioned above is an important means to realize the integral production and management in power supply sections.
