Middleware technology, together with operating system and database, are listed as the Top Three System Software Technologies. Application server technology is an important branch of middleware, which is used widely in E-commerce platform. It shields the complexity of operating system at the bottom level, provides the developer with a simple and uniform development environment so that he can pay more attention to the business logic and programming can be easier. In the development of JTang Application Server, which aims at facilitating the information technology of Manufacturing, Service, E-commerce, E-Government Affair in Zhejiang Province, we plan to develop a lightweight J2EE Application Server with independent intellectual property. This application server is expected to provide services as an EJB container, and services including JMS, JDBC and Connection Pool, JTS, JNDI, Cluster, JMX and dynamic deployment. Moreover, this application server will provide interfaces that access Corba and DotNet technologies, as well as the integration with Tomcat web container. This article explains the Service Management Framework in JTang application server. The main content is listed as below.Firstly, the system framework and microkernel of two open-source application server middleware product are thoroughly analyzed, combing JMX, IOC and AOP and other related technologies, the service management framework definition, architecture and features are introduced.Secondly, after introducing the architecture of JTang application server, detailed design of the JTang service management framework is explained from the perspectives of function spot, function model and key technologies. In comparison with JBoss and JFox, JTang service management framework' four major features are summarized: the lightweight container, adoption of IOC+JMX+AOP technology, advanced design pattern, and good manageability.Thirdly, JTang service management framework is divided into five sub modules: the microkernel sub-module, the J2EE deployment sub-module, the system class loading sub-module, the JTang Control sub-module, and the JTangMX sub-module. All key process are described in detail. Besides, a demo about the development result is provided.Fourthly, we developed a web-based management control, a rich and strong management tool, which can do execution, configuration, deployment, supervision, and maintenance on the JTang application server. Using this control, users can observe the performance of JTang application server, configure the running parameters, and deploy outer application on the server.Lastly, through introduced advanced, practical testing tools such as JTest, LoadRunner, in addition the standard test flow, a comprehensive test on JTang service management framework is conducted, from the function, the performance, and the user graphical interfaces with comparison to the related products .This work is supported by Zhejiang Province Key Software Development Foundation (No.2004C11053).
