As a kind of formal, common language in traditional engineering, three two-dimensional orthographic views play an important role in expressing designers' design intention, drawing up working procedure and exchanging technology. For a long time, the drawings have being recognized manually. This doesn't keep up with the development of new CAD/CAM technology. After many years research on this topic, all kinds of algorithms have been proposed. Although these methods have respective characteristic, the application of these methods remains to be an unresolved problem.Contrastively researching the past many primary algorithms, such as wireframe-oriented approach and model-oriented approach, probing into the technique of layered feature recognition based on the dimension and geometry information of views, from practical view, this paper proposes a method of gradedly reconstructing 3D models, which is according to the order that virtual volumes are prior to entities and revolved volumes are prior to extruded volumes. The method understands the solid from two sides of feature model and wireframe model. It has both the virtue of wireframe-oriented approach and the virtue of model-oriented approach. It avoids the thing of obtaining many results and also has better efficiency.Based on above research, this paper designs a new project of reconstructing 3D models from 2D orthographic views. The project proposes a method of unifying 2D data file format and designs one kind of data structure to express the feature's information. According to the method of gradedly reconstructing 3D models the text realize the reconstruction.For validating the method gradedly reconstructing 3D models and the new project of 3D reconstruction, based on AutoCAD, the paper realize the essential function of the 3D reconstruction system implement. And do some elementary tests by many examples of sample parts. The results indicate that our algorithm is feasible.
