On "Narrative Breakpoint" In Contemporary Chinese News Reporting

Breakpoint, a concept in narratology, refers a kind of omission or vacancy in narration. This thesis, with analysis of contemporary Chinese news texts, employs traditional and modern narratology theories to study breakpoint phenomenon and the generating mechanism of breakpoint. Also, the thesis explores the construction, the representation and the deep structure of certain news texts related to the breakpoint. Furthermore, the paper makes a categorized research on disaster reporting in mainland China and discusses the reasons of improper breakpoint in contemporary Chinese news coverage. Finally, it suggests to make proper use of breakpoint in news narration, so as to improve the organization of Chinese news texts.
