Banknote, blood of the modern financial system, is indispensible in the current world.Thanks to its sole serial number, it can be used as the measure of the issued banknotes in the country and in distinguishing the identity of the money.To monitor the banknote in circulation more effectively, it is necessary to develop the auto-recognition system for the banknote serial number, which can play active roles in attacking robbery, acceleration of breaking cases and preventing criminals. Moreover, the system will also be useful in appraising counterfeit notes and in recycle and exchange of the polluted notes. Based on DSP, the paper is to offer the designed software and hardware of the banknote serial number recognition system, which will be suitable for currency counting machine.Firstly, the paper introduces the current research situation in the technology of banknote serial number recognition both at home and overseas and analyzes its developmental prospects. After collecting and contrasting several common techniques in preprocessing digital pictures, we preprocess the collected banknote image and got the clear picture of the serial number. Combining the currency counting machine's requirements for speed and precision, the paper illustrates the serial number recognition calculation in detail based on the structure. On the basis of this, the hardware design of the system is fulfilled by adopting CMOS imaging sensor to collect banknote images, taking TMS320VC5509A DSP from TI Company as the core-centric processor and using CPLD as the instrument of time-sequence control. The hardware circuit includes the aspects like collecting circuit, extended memory circuit, CPLD internal logic circuit, power supply and reset circuit. The key technology and the fulfillment of every function module in the design of the hardware have also been introduced detailedly in this paper.The paper also discusses the software design of this system. Under the integrated development environment, the configuration program of image sensor and image data's collection, storage and processor are designed. A note image, 320 by 240, is tested by the banknote image preprocessing program and the serial number recognition program written with C programming language. And it is proven that the processing result is good by calculating this way.
