The Long Term Evolution (LTE) system is launched by 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) and its aim is to achieve high performance of radio communication, including higher data rate, lower delay, performance optimized for IP packets, and performance insurance of cell edge.In LTE system, cell search is a very important process for the user equipment (UE) to connect with base station when the UE power on. As Primary Synchronization Signal (PSS) detection is the first step of cell search, PSS is critical for cell search. UE can get more information of the serving cell and neighbor cells unless perform the cell search. Therefore, the research of PSS detection has very important meaning in the whole LTE system.This paper research on the LTE standard and system, then analyze the characters of PSS and two synchronization algorithm. The emphases are to design the algorithm of PSS detection and proposed two architecture of PSS detection. This paper use floating-point Matlab model and fix-point C model to do the performance simulation of our PSS detection algorithm. This paper analyzed the influences of several factors on the performance of PSS detection, such as SNR, CFO and the number of received antenna. We also analyzed the performance and area between the origin architecture and area-efficient architecture. At the end we design it with hardware and also test it with FPGA platform.The algorithm and the architecture of PSS detection proposed by this paper can finish 5ms frame synchronization, frequency offset estimation and group cell identification, and it can resist on additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and carrier frequency offset (CFO) well. The more important thing is that the improved architecture has high performance with low complexity.As a LTE terminal, performance and area are both very important factors. The architecture of PSS detection proposed by this paper not only has high performance but also comsumes very little hardware. So the area of the chip is small enough to reduce the cost of the chip, we can use the design into the application of LTE terminal chip. It has a lot of sense in practice.
