Radio frequency used for Identification (RFID), is the technology that enables wireless data capture, then their processing and transfer. This automatic identification method relies on storing and retrieving remote data, by using devices called as Transponders or RFID Tags. Its duality due to the fact that RFID belongs to Wireless and Automatic Identification Data Capture (AIDC) technologies and its practical utilization attracts the world market attention as essential technology for ubiquitous environment. Following this trend, the RFID Middleware as the most critical and essential part of every RFID system comes as a lightweight and scalable way to link application with their different requirements to RFID reader's operability. Its design is then a big challenge since it has to consider the interconnection of all RFID system components as diverse as they are, in their protocols and system conception, according to the application. Unfortunately, most of the RFID middleware are provided but with abstraction in the control of readers operability. This limitation restricts the performance of the RFID readers and makes the configuration inconvenient. To this end, this thesis reviews the RFID middleware design issues, focuses on the management of the readers, and designs a Reader Management Module (RMM). A middleware prototype is developed using Java and RMM is implemented in this prototype. With the new middleware system, both real and virtual RFID readers can be controlled by RMM. A user can monitor the status of RFID readers, configure the RFID readers and read or write a RFID tag conveniently using our proposed RMM. This module is scalable and can be used in a practical and complicated RFID system. The experiments and simulation results verify effectiveness of the proposed RMM.
