As LED display is applied in more fields, LED control system will achieve higher performance, more reduced architecture, more convenient user interface next years. Present LED synchronous control system includes control units and scan units, using pure distributed processing. Although this mode gains advanced performance, it makes a complex architecture, high cost and great difficulty in implementation. To solve this problem, this paper puts ahead a new reduced architecture, using concentrated controlling and distributed scanning.The general plan of this new system is based on analysis and comparison of many interface standards. Detailed design includes hardware circuit design and FPGA design. Hardware design, including power design and interface circuit design, obeys rules of power stability and signal integrity, using 4-layer PCB of excellent electrical characteristic. FPGA logic design of control unit takes advantage of Parallel Processing, ASIC and SOPC, and gets high performance on low cost hardwares. The FPGA design is verified by both static and dynamic timing analysis.Tests prove that all interfaces of the control unit run normally, and data processing, transmission are correct. Functions of the control unit fulfill requirements of the plan. The whole system can work stably in actual work fields. In a word, the new LED control system improves cost performance greatly in small-scale applications, satisfies conditions of LED display development in future, and has broad market prospects.
