W model computer hard disk is one of the most important products of S company. After the product was put into mass production, the Rolled Throughput Yield was hovering at low levels for a long time, much lower than the design target. This not only caused a large number of defective products to resulting in high operating costs, but also resulted in lower customer satisfaction bringing about the decline of the product orders. One of the main reasons caused the low Rolled Throughput Yield was the drive eccentricity failure which occurred in hard disk assembly process. So, how to effectively reduce the drive eccentricity failure was the business imperative faced by manufacturing operations.This article closely followed the Measure - Analyze - Improve - Control (DMAIC) improvement model of Six Sigma, and ultimately determined the four key factors which caused the drive eccentricity failure through Six Sigma tools, such as process analysis, failure mode and effect analysis, hypothesis testing, full factorial experimental design, etc. Then this article also developed and implemented the appropriate improvement and control solutions base on these key factors to effectively resolve the drive eccentricity. In this paper, the DMAIC Six Sigma improvement model, and the applications of the failure mode and effect analysis, hypothesis testing, full factorial experimental design, and the mechanism of the drive eccentricity were briefly described.This article through the application of Six Sigma DMAIC improvement model, successfully reduced the drive eccentricity defective rate in the assembly process of W model computer hard disk to a significant low level, enhanced the W product manufacturing quality, saved a lot of manufacturing operating costs for company, improved customer satisfaction, consolidated the market shares, and ultimately solved the business imperative. Meanwhile, the successful implementation of this improvement project had set a good example for promoting the further deployment of Six Sigma at the whole enterprise.
