Streetlights play an important role in urban infrastructure. The technology used to administrate streetlights is closely related to the traffic safety, public security, and represents the modernization of a city as well. With the acceleration of urbanization in our country, traditional methods to control and maintain streetlights are not able to keep up with the growing requirements. So it is of vital importance to design a highly automatic and intelligent streetlight monitoring and control system. The advancement of short distance wireless communication technology offers an effective way to meet this demand. The City Streetlight Control System discussed in this paper is the typical product of this technology, and it accomplished the tasks of monitoring and managing city streetlights. In this paper, short range wireless communication and computer technology are employed to monitor and control the distributed objects. The city streetlight control system is formed by the remote control center, the central monitoring node and the normal monitoring nodes. The control center communicates with the central monitoring nodes through the public communication network-GPRS. The central monitoring node exchanges data with normal nodes using short range wireless communication technology. This paper is mainly focused on the design of wireless monitoring network in a single road. It analyzes the hierarchical communication protocol of the monitoring network, which is based on the short range wireless communication technology. The wireless communication protocol consists of four layers, which is physical layer, MAC layer, network layer and application layer. Among these four layers, MAC and network layer are discussed in detail. This article researches the medium access mechanism which is based on token. It also puts forward a group divide algorithm and a routing protocol which is suitable for the special network topology of streetlight control system.
