To improve the Chinese enterprise's capacity on technology absorption, assimilation and recreation, a re-creative design method based on the function ontology has been proposed.Firstly, the theory of function ontology and its architecture are proposed, as well as creating the knowledge basis of function ontology. Secondly, by using the knowledge basis of function ontology, the form-to-function mapping is conducted through function matching, meta-function reasoning and function realization way finding, with the existing product structure as input and the function structure model as output. After comprehensively understanding and abstracting the original function model, the functional synonyms and antonyms are analyzed by functional generalization and specification. Such kind of functional analysis becomes the driving tool for specific functional improvements with function variation, which can lead to an upgradeable function model. Finally, with finding suitable new solution methods through function realization way base, the new function model can be transferred into a re-creative design solution.According to the principle of the re-creative design method based on the function ontology, by using SQL Server 2000 database system and Visual C#.NET, a software system of Computer-Aided Re-Creative Design was developed. The design process of the software, and module of the system, as well as the operation procedure of the system were described. Finally, by taking an Automatic Material Transport System as examples, the re-creative design method was explained in detail, and the software system was verified.
