Data Mining (DM) is a technique that aims to analyze and understand large source data and reveal knowledge hidden in the data. During the past decade or over, the concepts and techniques on data mining have been presented, and especially in the last few years, it caused enormous attention in the field of information industry. It involves a lot of subjects and develops with these subjects; this is an inevitable result from the contradiction between the fast-growing data volumes and the getting scarce amount of information. Therefore, the research and application on the system of data mining techniques in more depth, comprehensive and detailed is the objective requirements of global information development. The purpose of marine traffic's characteristics analysis is to gather and analyze basic data by using all effective means so that researchers are able to know the traffic status, characteristics and general rules from both macroscopic and microscopic views. With the development of the Automatic Identification System (AIS) and the continuous upgrading of information technology, a considerable number of AIS database has been established, which data is collected and stored through INTERNET. Faced with increasingly large AIS data of vessel traffic information rely on the traditional methods only can't support the information processing, so we must search for a new departure point. Therefore, mining potential, accurate and valuable information from the massive, chaotic data to enable better application of domestic and international shipping industry is an important research direction. It is in this background, aiming at the less research of networked AIS data, that this paper uses data mining methods to study marine traffic information and focuses on vessel traffic volume and time gap between ships, in order to obtain a good reference knowledge for the safety of shipping, port management, ship's operation and maritime administration, which may produce good economic and social benefits. This paper firstly describes the data mining technology on the marine traffic flow; navigate traffic accident analysis and prevention of marine-related fields such as analytical methods, application depth and breadth. Study on the AIS data collection, decoding and storage, building a data mining platform of the vessel traffic characteristics, expand on the example of Xiamen port, using of traffic volume, time-distance between the ships, through the AIS data collection platform for Jimei University in Xiamen Port and nearby access to the coastal waters of the navigation information on the ship, after digging out of SQL Server 2008 the channel of Xiamen Port is conducive to study the arrival of the ship channel data rules. Histogram produced in conjunction with SAS software in order to facilitate an intuitive, clear and to judge observations. After the study, can be comprehensive; objectively and accurately understand the ship out of Xiamen Port traffic volume, navigation capabilities of valuable data. For the maritime sector to provide basis for decision-making scientifically, but also channel accident analysis and to determine whether the main basis for the restricted waterway.
