Time delay of IP traffics is an indicator to measure the network performance and it is directly related to the quality of service (QoS) of entire network. Besides as the growth of Internet traffics and popularization of optical fiber to the home, IP traffics are becoming big granularity.Surveying the domestic and foreign research, presently the study based on the characteristics of big granularity IP traffic is mainly from following two aspects. On the one hand, the researchers study the single layer (IP layer or optical layer) network. On the other hand, discussing from the traffic data, they only study the one type of traffic unit data flow. This makes research results not well reflect characteristics of multiple layers and multiple types of traffic delay in transport network.In this paper, through the in-depth analysis of IP over WDM network structure, we study the characteristics of multiple layers and multiple types of traffic delay in transport network which bear the big granularity traffics. On the one hand, we considers the impact on time delay of IP and WDM two layer networks comprehensively, based on overlay model of IP over WDM network model and Dijkstra of routing algorithm, while using sum of queuing delay in IP layer and O/E/O delay in WDM layer as the research object to provide a new time delay calculation algorithm. The algorithm consists of three processes:traffic generation, traffic scheduling and traffic blocking. Traffic generation is by Fractional Brownian Motion (FBM) of the self-similar model. Traffic scheduling uses Weighted Round-Robin (WRR) algorithm and traffic blocking is according to the node capacity. On the other hand, due to a traffic in IP over WDM network will experience the processes from multiple packets in IP layer, then to a little optical burst in WDM layer, finally to the multiple packets in IP layer. Therefore this work considers the factor of traffic integrity during the calculation of time delay.At last, this paper uses the Multi-Level network planning system to simulate and analyze the effects of standard deviation of traffic weights and traffic numbers on time delay of IP traffics. Numerical simulation results show that time delay calculation algorithm can measure time delay dynamically. And time delay of IP traffics can be reduced by controlling standard deviation of weights.
