Digital home is a new concept appeared in the field of electronic information and home appliances recent years. It builds a wired or wireless environment in home to connect various digital terminals, such as home appliances and PCs. Then inner-home network will be connected to public network through digital home gateway and the information can be shared between inner-home terminals and also between external public network and inner-home terminals. With the increasing popularity of broadband digital TV and digitized residential entertainment, homenetworking is attracting increasing attentions in the industry, the academia and the standardization organizations. Multimedia sharing is a promising service in home networks. Effective Quality-of-Service (QoS) provision for various multimedia services is a very significant challenge in home networks due to real-time transmission demand, multimedia heterogeneous characteristics and limited resources over radio interface (e.g. power, bandwidth). In this paper, we propose a Joint Admission and Rate Control (JARC) scheme for the QoS requirements of multimedia sharing in wireless home networks. JARC is designed to support QoS at both the user level and the network level. In particular, JARC ensures QoS provision at the user level using rate control at the application layer by considering the heterogenous nature of in-home digital appliances and exploiting the ?exible multimedia processing. In addition, JARC is able to provide parameterized QoS guarantee at the network level using admission control of the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer by accurately predicting the QoS parameters with respect to packet delay and the bandwidth configuration of multimedia sessions. Simulation results demonstrate that JARC is able to ?exibly allocate the wireless bandwidth to various multimedia services and provide QoS guarantee for multimedia applications in home networks.Compared with existing work, our main contributions are three aspects.(1)By jointly optimizing the admission control and rate control, JARC significantly improves the wireless bandwidth utilization and provides satisfying QoS for multimedia sharing in home.(2) A queuing analysis method is developed to support the joint optimization of admission and rate control. The proposed queuing analysis method considers unsaturated network condition and introduces the GI/M/1 model to describe the status of each station. The method is more suitable for QoS provision in practical networks than traditional methods based on saturated analysis. It also reacts more promptly than measurement-based methods for realtime applications.(3) JARC exploits the basic framework of the UPnP standard. As a result, JARC is essentially compatible with most existing home networking standards, and hence, easy to implement in practice.
