As the exploding development of Computer Networks, multimediaservices are becoming one of the most significant sections among networkservices. Multimedia services set up a tough challenge for our traditionalcomputer networks. The network framework, which at first was designedfor simple services, has to provide QoS required by multimedia applications. While the network resources go uptight and the network is evolving towireless communication, the issue becomes more acute. Especially, videodelivery is one of the most challenging topics. Focusing on the server-side system in the video transport structure, thethesis discusses the two major fields, Rate Shaping and Admission Control. After reviewing the system structure, the essential issues and literatureon video transport, we analyze the principles of video compression takingMPEG video as a paradigm. As the major control object in the system, theinherent features and particular QoS requirements of VBR video determinethe essential issue and approach in this field. The fourth chapter presents one of our two major works, Rate Shaping. The chapter discusses the theory on Rate Shaping. The Rate Shapingproblem can be regarded as a special optimization problem. We introduce aprime algorithm proposed by others. More, we implement the algorithm forMPEG1/2 video. The experiment results are analyzed and we conduct thein-depth discussion. Chapter 5 describes the other working section, Admission Control forVBR video on server side. Firstly, we introduce the theory on PoissonCounter Driven Stochastic Differential Equation (PDSDE). By applying thetheory, we set up the VBR video source description model and the systemmodel. Based on the PDSDE-enabled model, we conduct queuing analysisfor Admission Control. The conclusion enables our Admission Controlscheme. Our scheme takes the consideration of the impacts that thestatistical features of VBR video bring to the system queuing performance. Thus, the server can adjust its VBR video traffics on its own to achieveexpected QoS requirements without the extra network assistance. Thesimulation validates our conclusion. Especially, the Rate Shaping techniqueis applied in our scheme to operate the VBR video flows. The thesis conducts the instructive exploration on video delivery, drawing some original theoretical conclusion and proposing algorithmframeworks.
