After years of fundamental research and surveys, a large amount of geological data which covers various branches of geosciences have been accumulated. Those data involve not only general information of geosciences, but also specific properties of different fields. Relationship databases and file organization systems are generally used in the storage and exchange of geological data. They are commonly described in diverse resources in different styles and formats. What's more, traditional information searching methods couldn't extract implicit meaning and relationships from terms in these datasets, which lead to serious heterogeneity problems. Therefore, the inner relationship of the data can not be exhibited, and the data can not be fused and analyzed completely. In order to realize the sharing and integrating of the heterogeneous data, especially in the aspect of semantic sharing, we refer to the Domain Ontology which is capable of semantics translation, this paper contains three parts:(1) The paper analyzes existing problem and necessity in sharing of basic geological, and explores the possibilities of using domain ontology to realize data sharing in the light of mining technique situation at home and abroad.(2) Studying building methods of domain ontology, embodying adequately advantages of it in clarity expression of concept, easy to reading and reasoning capacity. On the basis, this paper studies mapping strategy between domain ontology and basic geological data, by making use of ontology to translate implicit semantic in Multi-source heterogeneous data, solving problem of semantic heterogeneity in the multi-source heterogeneous data.(3) On this basis, several cases of using domain ontology are discussed in the practical application of semantic translation based on the data set of the earth sciences, and achieved good results, show that the ideas and methods of effective and feasible.By studying the building methods of Domain Ontology in geosciences, mapping strategy of Ontology and relevant databases, demonstrating the non-exclusivity in the categorization of the geological data by expressing the semantics clearly in data retrieval.
