Virtualization technology represents the abstract of computing resources. It is an effective IT solution for pooling and sharing resources that can help customers reduce costs and optimize utilization, and thus create a dynamic balance between supply and demand of infrastructure platform. Virtual machine is the most basic deployment unit in this platform. Therefore, the management and control on virtual machines and other virtual devices is very important. However, the diversity of hypervisor and equipment brings a certain difficulty for the unified management of these virtual resources. Virtual machine management platform adaptation layer is addressed for the above issue. It provides a uniform API (Application Programming Interface) interfaces for upper applications to manage a variety of different virtualization provisions and hypervisors.Fisrtly, we carry out a systematic research and summary on the background and development of the virtual machine management platform adaptation layer, and analyze the advantages and scenarios of adaptation layer. And then, we analyze and sort the key technologies involved in the virtual machine management platform. In this paper, we use an open source adaptation layer Libvirt as an example to study the key technologies and realization princple. On this basis, we analyze and evaluate the effects on the performance and scalability caused by the introduction of adaptation layer from CPU, memery, disk and network I/O. Finally, some virtual environment performance optimization recommendations are provided, and based on practical experience in this article, a general model of the test system is presented.Hardware-assisted virtualization technology is a trend, so in the paper we use Intel-VT (Intel Virtaulization Technology) technology and KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) as a testing environment. Based upon the test experiments, we can draw a conclusion that is the adaption layer of virtualization management platform has little effect on performance and scalability. The advantages of adaptation layer are far greater than the performance loss, so the adaptation layer is a good choice for unified management of virtaul resources.
