Network everything is our ultimate dream about communications. With the development of science and technology, this dream is gradually becoming a reality. As an emerging technology, machine to machine communication (M2M) has a broad market and great prospects and represents the technologies that are able to network and communicate with all the machinery and equipment. M2M communication is used to achieve different varieties of information needs in many industries. It is an attractive solution that M2M services are provided by the existing mobile cellular networks. The research and development of UMTS system is based on this solution.At the beginning of this thesis, there is a brief summary of the UMTS system, including UMTS system structure, subsystem partitioning, basic traffic types, frame structure and evolution. And it describes the basic signalling procedures in UMTS system.The characteristics of M2M traffic relative to H2H traffic are summarized in this thesis. According to the different trigger of session that is initiated by M2M, M2M traffics are classified. With the classification and traditional modeling method of H2H traffics, the M2M modeling method of two-tier structure is given. The two-tier structure is session level and packet level. Taking into account the fact that M2M group is relevant in some cases, the uniform distribution model and the Gaussian distribution model for M2M group are presented. And the M2M traffic modeling is researched in the case of signalling procedures.The system-level simulation platform for UMTS is designed by the thinking of C++ and object-oriented programming. The hybrid simulation mechanism, including timer-triggered approach and event-triggered approach, is used in the system. A series of discrete events are defined and the triggering relationships between these events are given. The basic simulation scenario for macrocell, the complete uplink and downlink processes of simulation system are indicated. The system is divided into modules by different functions. And the implementation processes of main modules are explained.At last, the simulations are designed under the given conditions and assumptions of UMTS system that has established, for the purpose of investigating the support capacity for M2M and transmission performance of UMTS system on M2M in CELL-FACH state. The correctness of M2M traffic model is proved by analyzing the simulation data. To further support the mass M2M, it is necessary to optimize the cellular network.
