The search engine is an efficient tool for users to retrieve and utilize mass data information on Internet. However, with the expansion of the scale of the Internet, the growth of user groups, the diversification of the data format, and the specialization of search, universal text search engine cannot satisfy the demand of users, search engines are facing more and more challenges. In mathematics, mathematics search is very important for mathematics knowledge interflow and sharing, but the current full-text search technology could not provide satisfactory mathematics search capability.This paper analyzes the state of the art in mathematics search in detail, and proposes constructing a mathematics search engine, called MathSearch. This paper focuses on the indexing methods of mathematical formulas. Mathematical formula different from text with abundant formula structure and semantic information, thus the index of mathematical formula must contain the structure and semantic information to support efficient mathematical formulas query. This paper proposes two indexing methods, one is mathematical symbols index based on text and the other is mathematical formula index based on relational database. The first method indexes mathematical symbols and handles mathematical formulas as the combing sequence of mathematical symbols. The second method indexes mathematical formulas in relational database, the database tables store the structure information of the formulae. Two methods support the search of mathematical formula effectively.
