In order to construct the traditional virtual world composed of geometry model, the objects'information has to be collected first, and then the model was built. The more complex the scene is, the longer the modeling period would take, the lower the rendering speed would become. As a result, it is difficult to build a scene through geometry modeling in a short period, especially when the scene is a complex one.On the contrary, the construction of image-based virtual space does not need complex object models. With panoramic images and some simple models such as cubes, cylinders or spheres, a photo-realistic virtual scene can be constructed. Image based modeling method has several advantages, such as rapid construction speed, realistic scene expression and rich scene content. The real-time roaming is always possible without regarding to the scene complexity.Focus on the construction and application of image-based virtual space, the work of this dissertation is listed as follows:(1) The development of the roaming platform in image-based virtual space. Based on the research of panoramic generation method, image-based virtual space construction method, video compressing technique and automatic 2D map generation method, the roaming platform is developed, which makes the real-time roaming in image-based virtual space possible.(2) The proposition of a missing hole restoration method using complementary information. In order to repair the hole in the panoramic image caused by image collection device, a method of spherical texture coordinate replacement method through complementary information within two images is proposed, which is then used in the roaming platform.(3) The application of image-based virtual space in the traffic information collection and 3D reconstruction of crime scene. Based on the combination of binocular vision technique with platform of image-based virtual space, the image-based virtual space was successfully applied in the information collection and 3D reconstruction of crime scene, and a reasonable application result is achieved.
