Currently, with the grown-up of streaming media technology and the increasing of network transmission speed, streaming media has been more and more popular. Because most of the media transported through the network is either video or audio, this would bring network congestion to the Internet. For the purpose of preventing network congestion, we should implement and deploy a format recognition system to recognize video compression encoding format on the streaming media server. Then, we could judge whether the streaming media transmission influences network traffic on the internet or not.Firstly, we introduce some related technologies, including major streaming media transport protocols, video compression coding standards, video encoding formats and so on. Secondly, we present a recognition method of adaptive video compression encoding format. Our method consists of four parts, i.e, LAN monitoring, analysis of streaming media transmission protocols, streaming media format recognition and local format recognition. Thirdly, we design and implement a system with four modules. Finally, we integrate all modules and deploy the system to the streaming media server. By the system instances, both the validity and veracity are verified by the results.
