Design And Implementation Of SNMP-Based Network Management System

Network management system (NMS) is a software-based distributed network application system which includes software and hardware, the role of which is to manage the network and make the network work in safety and normal mode. Users can find and eliminate network failures by means of Network management system, It can detect, analyze and control network devices by the network management, and ensure various services of network systems running normally. In the long-term practice of network operation and management, Industry has formed a whole set of industry-standard of network management to meet these requirements. As one of network management protocols, SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is the industry standard which is widely accepted and put into use. SNMP is a application layer protocol of the TCP/IP Protocol Suite. SNMP's packets transfer is based on UDP protocol and it adopts a Client/Server model:Management/Agent model. Through the interaction between the managements and agents, realizing the basic function of network management and maintenance.Based on researching and summarizing the SNMP protocol and relevant content of network management, This article implementations a network management system of the Client/Server structure.The main work and achievements are as follows:1. After analyzing the composition and architecture of Network management system, the designing goals and principles are given, then the general framework is described.2. the main function modules are presented, including element management, VPN management, security policy centralized management, performance management and alarm management. The design proposal,front and backstage processing, achieve results of them are described in detail. Among these five functions, Element management is one of the basic functions of NMS, adding a variety of network devices to network management system by SNMP protocol. VPN management and s ecurity policy centralized management collect and send network element characteristic configuration information through SNMP and telnet protocol, which try to avoid the user operating the device on the command line directly. Meanwhile, the performance management and alarm management illustrate and analyze the relevant data of element performance and fault information through NMS, then users can learn network elements running status and control them conveniently.3. According to the design principles and implementation technology of the five functional modules, I have implement the entire network anagement system based on IMAP platform, and the application status of NMS in actual business environment has been tested.4. This network management system designed to manage network elements via SNMP, but also providing command-line configuration management approach to the network elements. As a EMS (Element Management System) system, NMS provide the interface for the upper network management system to achieve systems integration and extension.The NMS proposed in this paper allows users to monitor, predict and detect network failures more quickly, improves the quality of service of network operating and the reliability of network running by analyzing operational bottlenecks, planing and employing network resources rationally. Also the operation cost is reduced through the centralized management widespread network nodes.
