With the ever-increasing of service demand, especially the use of 3G technology, the size of optical transport network is expanding. Planning of new networks and its merging with existing networks, updating of equipments, all make the network topology becoming more and more complex. The new attributes of network set higher requirements for network planning and designing.To meet the demand of a national designing institute, in this paper, we developed a network optimization software, including the framework and the functions, researched the topology planning algorithm and multi-layer multi-domain routing algorithm.It is necessary to plan the network before building it. Ring network is still the main architecture because of its self-healing ability. Given the nodes in the network, how to connect these nodes is a traveling salesman problem. In this paper, we discussed the method of forming a ring both theoretically and technologically.In the current complex optical transport networks, traditional SDH, WDM equipments coexist with the new intelligent devices. Meanwhile, in order to meet the demand of collaborative plan among different network operators, we need to tackle with the multi-layer multi-domain network architectures. In this paper, a new multi-layer multi-domain routing algorithm was proposed. In this system, the network was divided into different layers vertically, they are core layer, convergence layer and access layer. The network was divided into different domains horizontally. Different protection and recovery mechanisms can be used in different domains.In recent years, GIS is widely used in every field. In order to take the geographical environment into consideration when planning the networks, we also brought GIS into the optimization software. In this paper, we will deeply discuss these problems.
