As people's demand on network capacity and data transmission speed becomes higher and higher, optical access network, thanks to its own advantages in featuring broad bandwidth, high immunity to interference, high data speed and low cost, plays a key role in modern communication. Optical transceivers, being the fundamental components in the electronic to optic conversion and vice versa, are core parts in the optical access field. They are substantially widely used in the service extending of optical access network and in project researching of optical communication. It is the prerequisite to fully and precisely test optical transceivers'performance for following correct and reliable usage of them. In this paper, with hardware and software conditions provided by laboratory, a system is designed to test optical transceivers'performance and the reality testing is done, which lays a solid foundation for their further research and application.This paper firstly analyzes its background and the present research situation at home and abroad. Then, given this paper's research value, it systematically discusses optical transceivers'parameters to be tested. To make the testing design easy, it categorizes all parameters, optical and electronical, of transmission and reception.Optical transceivers are such components of high speed in electricity and optics that their high speed transmission and reception unavoidably involve complicated electronic and magnetic coupling and signal glitch. Thus the powerful Cadence is chosen as the software tool to design the circuits and the global and interference-free design is considered in the PCB layout. The idea of modularization is used to make the testing system able to test optical transceivers'wave level data as well as to test end to end communication. Finally, the testing system goes through testing verification upon optical transceivers used in the research, with the main electronic, optic, transmission and reception parameters included. The testing results show that the testing system works reliably, capable of giving a comprehensive testing with general purpose and producing good data, which demonstrates the feasibility of this design.
