On The Problems And Countermeasures Of Parents' Selecting Of Children's Books

The researcher surveyed parents on their selecting of children's reading materials through interviews and questionnaires. The questionnaire is compiled on five factors, which are parents'cognition, children's needs, selecting methods, characteristics of children's books, and the book market. Comparing the mean values of all the five factors, we get the order of importance as follow:selecting methods, children's needs, parents'cognition, factors of the book market, characteristics of children's books. Thus, we can say that the parents are influenced most by the factor of selecting methods, specifically, by the purchasing places, children's participation when purchasing, and the types of the books.Meanwhile, demographic variance analysis on parents'choice shows that, family monthly income and kids'starting time of reading have remarkable impacts on all the factors. That is to say, these two dimensions influence parents'selecting.Analysis of the questionnaire and interviews showed that, the major problems of parents'selecting are:Ⅰ.Parent's knowledge on the importance of children's books is somewhat biasedⅡ.Parents sometimes blindly adore the best selling children's books.Ⅲ.Parents haven't quite thought through when selecting the contents of the books.Ⅳ.Parents sometimes are confused in the bookstores.The suggested countermeasures for these problems are:Ⅰ.Build up the correct ideas of being a parent, and select children's books reasonably.Ⅱ.Select children's books scientifically according to children's psychological characteristics.Ⅲ.According to children's books classification feature and rational selection of children's booksⅣ.Analyze the situation of the book market rationally to reassure the qualities of books.V.Know the scientific selecting methods and standards of qualified children's books.
