Energy conservation and emission reduction is an increasingly prominent global issue involved in all walks of life right now. For streaming media server, the storage system is the biggest power consumer. This topic comes from the streaming media subsystem of national outstanding courses integration project. In this paper, an Energy Conservation for Three-State Disk Model is proposed to save energy for streaming media servers composed of conventional disks. The approach has applied to the video website of national outstanding courses integration project. Two main points is reported in this paper as follows:(1) Three-State Disk Energy Saving Model (3SD-ESM) is proposed. According to the load threshold, the disks are dynamically divided into three states:overload, normal and standby. With the request arriving, the disk state transition among these three states. The main function of 3SD-ESM is to skew the load towards a few of the disks, so that the overload disks can change its state to normal for enhancing the QoS, and the normal disk switch into standby mode to save more energy.(2) Sliding Window Replacement (SWR) algorithm is proposed. To implement the disk state transition, data is need to migrate into the corresponding disks. In order to determine which blocks to migrate among disks, a sliding window replacement (SWR) algorithm is studied and applied. SWR statistics the request frequency falling within the window of a block to calculate the block weight, and replaces the blocks by the weight value.The paper uses a validated simulator Disksim, and evaluates these techniques mentioned above. The results show that this approach saves more energy than other existing energy-efficient techniques. The research results have been applied to the video website of national outstanding courses integration project. In the future, the results can be applied to the energy saving of server cluster or disk array, and they will have broad application prospects.
