Due to the wide use of advanced information technology in this field, both management and efficiency have been upgraded, whereas operational costs lowered. Transportation costs a considerably large portion of the whole. Therefore, how to effectively reduce the costs of logistics transportation is of great economic significance. In addition, how to improve the supervision of vehicles and cargos in transit is especially difficult in the management.We have developed a GSM and GPS-based logistics management system to solve the above-mentioned problems. The realization of this system depends on the application of GSM/GPRS&GPS industrial modules and GSM MODEM. By the application of the system, these enterprises can keep in good touch with cargo vehicles in transit and their conditions, help their clients to know locations and conditions of both vehicles and cargos at any moment, and therefore guarantee the effective supervisory control and fast operation of the whole logistics distributing process.The realization of a GSM and GPS-based logistics management system depends on the object-oriented (OO) software development approaches. The entire system adopts the concept of object-orientation to analyze, design, and develop software. Furthermore, it employs Rose Rational 2003 to fulfill its UML modeling process. The GPS-based physical distribution transportation management system is in fact a Web application program which is achieved with a variety of technologies such as Net Framework, ASP.NET, C#, ADO.NET, and XML Service of the Visual Studio.Net development platform.This thesis aims to make researches and exploitations on the design and application of the Logistics Transportation Management System. In the thesis, UML will be applied and the whole exploitation process of the Logistics Transportation Management System which is based on GSM and GPS will be illustrated in detail. The whole exploitation process of the Logistics Transportation Management System which is based on GSM and GPS mainly consists of On-vehicle Terminal which is composed of GSM net, GSM&GPS module and corresponding cable, and Logistics Management Center which is composed of Logistics Transportation Management Information System, Computer System, and GSM Modem which is connected with the Computer System.To the communication between GPS and Logistics Transportation Management System, the thesis proposes distinctive solution to the communication and carries the solution into effect. In the On-vehicle terminal of the system, GSM/GPRS&GPS Industry Module will be applied in On-vehicle Terminal to receive location data from GPS and net communication with GSM. In the Logistics Management Center of the system, the GPS function module of Logistics Transportation Management Information System is in charge of information exchange with mobile communication and On-vehicle Terminal, information classification and transmitting location information. The application of the communication between Logistics Transportation Management Information System and On-vehicle Terminal in Logistics Management Center includes the following layers:1. Equipments Interface Layer:to receive the data, sent by On-vehicle Terminal, from GSM net through GSM MODEM which is connected with Management Center. GSM MODEM is connected with the computer of Logistics Management Center through serial port. A short message service enables the computers of management center to get data from serial ports.2. Data Visitation Layer:to be carried out by applying the attributes, methods and events of the short message service. 3. To get corresponding data by applying relative attributes, methods and events of the short message service, and store the data in the database for the use of Logistics Management System, which contributes to the integration of short message data and logistics system data. The whole system improves the application during the process of logistics transportation Managing and decreases the management cost for logistic enterprises.
