With the rapid development of auto industry in China, there is an increasing demand for vehicle electronic device. Cassette recorders & players and radio broadcasts have gradually developed into high-tech service system composed of GPS navigation, communications and entertainment subsystems. On one side, the development of electronic technology and modern communication technology can provide high quality technical support for vehicle terminal system. On the other side, embedded technology provides a feasible solution for the development of vehicle electronic device. In this paper, we design and implement a vehicle multimedia terminal. On the basis of a single navigator, we expand the multimedia player function and visual reversing function to upgrade from car navigation systems to multimedia terminal.In the beginning, we analyzed the development tendency of vehicle systems. Next, based on the technologies of automotive electronics and embedded system, we presented an overall design scheme of vehicle multimedia terminal. Taking S3C2440 processor as the core combined with corresponding peripheral circuit, we implemented the hardware platform design of car multimedia terminal. Afterwards, we chose Windows CE as the operating system of the developing platform, determined and configured hardware, and integrated it into our embedded system, as well as technologies of GPS position, multimedia player and parking distance control. Besides, for fulfilling different user requirements for multimedia players, in the design instead of default windows media player, we adopted an open source software- the Core Pocket Media Player (TCPMP). Moreover, based on the primary broadcasting capability, we analyzed popular Flash Video (FLV) file format, re-established encoding program and achieved FLV format support. Finally, the results show that our proposed system had good performance and achieved the expected goals of multimedia terminal on vehicles.
