Wireless sensor network, is formed by the combination of sensor technology, embedded computing technology, modern network and wireless communication technology, distributed information processing technology and so on. Through various integrated micro-sensor to sense and gather information on a variety of monitoring objects in real time, through the embedded systems to process information, and through random self-organizing wireless network to send perceptual information to user termination by multi-hop relaying mode, which truly realize "ubiquitous computing" concept. The wireless sensor network has a very broad application prospects, because it is small, energy-saving, cheap, flexible and convenient. Thus it is considered one of the technologies that will have a huge influence in the 21st century.Firstly, this paper briefly introduces the concept, system structure, characteristics, key technologies of wireless sensor networks, and topological structure of coal mine safety monitoring system that was proposed by the group, and selects an important technical that can affect the system performance- routing protocol as focus of the study. Then it gives the comparison and study of several kinds of typical existing routing protocols of WSN. After that, the author abstracts the excellent thoughts of various algorithms, and on this basis, designs a new routing algorithm that is suitable for branch network of safety monitoring system that is proposed by the group—Threshold Sensitive Single-hop within Cluster and Multi-hop among Clusters Sensor Network Routing Algorithm(TSSM)。In TSSM, the author assumes all nodes were static distribution, and uses the one-time clustering. That is to say, the network is divided into clusters when it is initialized, member nodes within the cluster will no longer be changed in subsequent rounds. Thereby reducing the energy consumption of multiple clustered; Through the cluster head node election cycle to spread the cost of the network; Through the division of virtual cells and the requirement of non-active node sleeping and setting of activities node soft and hard threshold to reduce the network redundancy; Cluster head uses data fusion techniques to reduce the amount of data transmission over the network; Through the method of inter-cluster multi-hop diffuse the energy consumption of cluster head away from gateway to the other cluster head nodes in the network. The simulation and performance comparison of DD,LEACH and TSSM were done by MATLAB7.1. Simulation results show that TSSM can be more effective using of network resources, balancing the energy consumption, and prolonging the lifetime of network.
