With the deeply development of communications and multimedia technology applications, the continually improvement of imaging technology, as well as increasing image resolution and accuracy, the amount of data of image storage and transmission has increased dramatically.The study of image data compression is of great importance and must have a bright future.This paper summarizes the main digital image compression technology,and focuses on the study of image transform based image compression technology which is now widely used. K-L transform, Fourier transform, discrete cosine transform and wavelet transform applied to image compression is studied systematically. Special attention is focused on the wavelet transform theory. Continuous wavelet transform, muitl-resolution analysis,lifting wavelet transform,and the system of wavelet transform based image compression is studied.This paper also gives a brief introduction to the structure and advantages of the new generation image compression standard JPEG2000, the introduction to the hardware resources and designing features of FPGA is also involved,which lays the groundwork for the later hardware design in the paper.The wavelet transform module is designed on the FPGA hardware platform with the JPEG2000 image compression standard for reference. The clock system design, the port design and other design details is described in this paper. Design of the hardware architectural structure and detailed design of each submodule of the wavelet transform module is amply described. After simulation, data and time sequence is all correct, and the module works smoothly, meeting the requirement of real-time image processing.
