The vehicle navigation system has a huge market prospect in the world, while the construction of China's navigation system is still in its infancy, when many software development companies are aiming to develop a new vehicle GPS navigation system with high performance, low price flattering to common people, and easy use, so as to further broaden the market of vehicle GPS navigation system. In this paper, on the basis of study basic theory of vehicle navigation system, a framework of the system is designed according to users' requirement, and each module function of it is determined. More attentions are paid to the discussion of how to design and inplement two modules, namely map matching and path planning. What is map matching? It, with highly accurate road information as data base for matching, compares and matches the information of vehicle location and DR trajectory received from GPS receiver with the road data on electronic maps, in order to find where the vehicles are. Taking the complexity of road structure and surroundings of modern cities into account put forward the DR-centered GPS/DR map-matching algorithm. What is route planning? It, under the condition of given vehicle location and destination location, according to different conditions made by users, helps to calculate out one or more paths which are the most closed from vehicle location to destination location. Based on the characteristics of KIWI (navigation map data format), namely data hierarchy and block storage, put forward the design and implementation of A Star algorithm based on hierarchical search.
