The traditional manual meter reading with the characteristics of simple implementation and low one-time equipment investment need meter readers to go to the users, but this approach can not satisfy the requirement of downsizing for efficiency for expending a great deal of manpower and material resources. The management and statistics of the meter data will be extremely cumbersome and takes a lot of manpower.With the increasingly development of information society, image processing and machine vision technology are applied in the continuous development of all walks of life. As computer technology advances, the management of the industry is transforming from manual to automatic or semi-automatic, such as license recognition, seal identification and handwriting number recognition, etc. The improvement of quality of life and rate of production are implemented by the real-time computer control system. The main research of this paper is on water meter number recognition. A water meter number recognition system is designed based on CMOS image sensor. This system consisted of image acquisition, image processing, image recognition and other parts.The main achievements and contents are summarized as follows:(1) In this paper, OV7670 CMOS image sensor is controlled by MCU to collect the meter number image. Due to MCU internal resources are limited, a 32K RAM is expanded for storing image data collected by image sensor. The image acquisition circuit is designed and the image acquisition procedures are prepared. By selecting the appropriate device, hardware platform is built.(2) Before the meter Recognition, the image data need to be preprocessed, including gray-scale transformation, image filtering, binary image segmentation and morphological filtering. The number localization of water meter is a key issue in the identification process. In this thesis, the number localization is achieved by two steps: coarse location and precise location.(3) In order to achieve the purpose that reading water meter number directly in hardware circuit, this paper analyzes respective the recognition algorithm based on template matching numbers and the recognition algorithm based on numerical background expression. Comparing their characteristics, the recognition algorithm based on numerical background expression is finally adopted to complete water meter identification.(4) The identification results of meter is sent up to PC through wireless data transmission module which connected to the controller, allowing the user information to be unified managed in PC.In the end, a conclusion made to the thesis and the future researches are pointed out.
