With the rapid development of network technology, computer networks are becoming more and more complex by the day; managing large networks is a difficult and expensive endeavor. In corporate networks, in order to utilize the network more effectively, we need to monitor network devices to improve network performance, quality of service (QoS), security and network devices'utilization efficiency. Therefore, this paper proposes a method, which uses LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) to design network devices configuration policies and SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) to retrieve the status of network devices, and then compares data from two sources to monitor and manage the utilization of equipments in Windows Server 2003 Active Directory. This paper analyzes the characteristics of network device management system objects in Active Directory, abstracts these objects' common attributes to facilitate convenient monitoring and management of network devices. This paper standardizes the description of objects through definitions and settings on objects' categories and attributes; designs directory structure so that data can be effectively accesses by applications. The system uses LDAP (with ADSI interfaces) to retrieve and store data. The system sets the operation parameters for devices in Active Directory via policy settings, and retrieves corresponding information from devices using SNMP, then compares data from two sources to determine whether the device is working normally. If inconsistency is detected, the system will alert the administrator, and allow the administrator to decide what step he/she should take next. This paper, first, examines the current situation of network management at home and abroad, introduces the basic principle of network device resources management in Active Directory, explains the basic concepts of SNMP, LDAP and Active Directory, then details the construction of management policies as well as the design and implementation of the management system, and finally conducts software testing to verify the usability of the system. The system is implemented using Visual C++, and multithreading is introduced to improve system's performance. This paper proposes a solution, based on the Windows Active Directory framework, adopts LDAP and SNMP as well as policies to achieve unified management and monitoring network devices resources. The solution provides a secure, reliable and effective platform to manage network devices in Active Directory in corporate networks.
