There are almost infinite Web sites on the Internet. The entry of Internet firstly was few URLs kept on papers, then replaced by Internet yellow page but now the most common one is search engine. It's not so convenient to surf the Internet with search engine because of so many searches. That's why new Portals like iGoogle, Yahoo! and MSNBC come. These new portals could present information from diverse sources in a unified way and they also could integrate Web applications and systems. Many enterprises also hope their intranet portals provide these features. Java Community Process(JCP) defined specifications for these new portals which called portlet-based Web sites.Portlet is a pluggable Web component. It could either be a highly customized information source or a Web interface of some service and systems. Developers build personalized powerful Web sites with portlets which could manage complex information and integrate services easily. Independence makes portlets divide complexity of the whole Web sites and allows portlets could be developed in parallel that speedup the development process.Because of too many components included on Web pages and complexity of backend business process, there is performance issue of portlet-based Web sites. This thesis introduces portlet-based Web sites, addresses its performance issue, concludes the rules of performance tuning and provides detailed solution. And some performance testing is executed to verify this performance tuning solution.
