In the era of knowledge economy, products of small-volume, individuation and humanization become the new competition focus, knowledge content of products is increasing, product innovation is faster and faster, so that product design capability becomes the primary factor in the competitiveness of enterprises. Design activity is often knowledge-intensive and time-costing. Knowledge factors must be considered in design activity. Management and sharing of domain knowledge become serious problems. Product design, especially complex product design, is often involving multiple disciplines, needs cooperation of different disciplines designers. Designers of different areas and disciplines have different knowledge background. How to unify concept term for designers to facilitate better communication is also a facing problem. Using ontology modeling and integration for the multidisciplinary product design knowledge may unearth product design knowledge fully, enhance the knowledge sharing and reusing, raise the efficiency of product design.This dissertation describes development status of multidisciplinary ontology building and integration, and does a systematic study on ontology engineering theory knowledge. Combining the multidisciplinary characteristics on the basis of analyzing rules of ontology building, rules of building multidisciplinary ontology are introduced. Studying methods of building ontology, it proposes modularization life-cycle method. Analyzing existing methods of ontology integration and combining multidisciplinary ontology building theory, methods of multidisciplinary ontology integration are introduced. Multidisciplinary ontology on hydraulic support design calculation is built and integrated according to multidisciplinary ontology building and integration methods proposed. The multidisciplinary ontology building and integration methods were proved to be feasible.
