Manufacturing industry must respond quickly to the market by way of the fastest speed, lowest cost to provide the best quality products and the best services, because of the diversification and complexity of product requirement, the shortening of the product life cycle and the globalization of markets. Collaborative design becomes the first choice to many large-scale projects. Design activity is often knowledge-intensive activity and time-costing. Knowledge factors must be considered in design activity to support the knowledge management and sharing in collaborative design process. The use of ontology in knowledge management can unearth the coordination design-related knowledge fully, enhances the knowledge sharing and reusing, raise the efficiency of collaborative design.This dissertation analyzed the realistic requirement of collaborative design on ontology building and integration. On the base of summarizing the development of ontology, this dissertation introduced the ontology technology, and compared ontology building languages, ontology building methods, ontology building tools, ontology integrating forms, ontology integrating tools respectively. Above that, collaborative design framework based on ontology was build. Collaborative design knowledge organization based on ontology was designed. Helix method, an ontology building method fitted collaborative design was put forward. Based on the study of ontology integration theories, this dissertation put forward a new ontology integration method faced collaborative design.In order to validate the rationality, this dissertation designed hydraulic support type-choosing ontology and hydraulic support design calculation ontology with Protege 3.3.1 developed by Stanford University, and integrated the two ontologies in Prompt, which is a plug-in of Protege and a semiautomatic ontology integration tool. By this, the ontology building method and integration form were proved to be feasible.
