Interpersonal apathy was defined as an attitude which makes somebody not help others even if he was supposed to do so. People who have a high level attitude of interpersonal apathy will have low grade of empathy about victims, only concerning about themselves when others in trouble. On other hand, this attitude is affected by the distrust of victims. For example, a person might not help old people who tumbled because afraid of being cheated. Someone could not donate money to unfortunate people who was suspected of fraud. Interpersonal apathy is an important index of possibility and enthusiasm of helping others. College student is an important and potential power to maintain and promote the development of society, so the study of college students’ interpersonal apathy contributes to further analysis and discussion on the indifference in the time of social transformation. At present, there are few researches on the theoretical structure. Many researchers explored the influence factors on helping behavior, but there is not research about the inner factors of no-helping behaviors. Additionally, there is no one giving a theoretical construct of interpersonal apathy. Therefore, studies about questionnaire of interpersonal apathy are beneficial to future research theoretically and empirically. Our study aims at analyzing structure and characteristics of college student’s interpersonal apathy and discusses features of interpersonal apathy. Based on overviews of former researches on helping behaviors and bystander apathy, interviews with college students and investigation of questionnaire to advanced theoretical hypothesis of interpersonal apathy, we made the questionnaire formally. Though the investigation of 121 in-college students, we explored the relationships between interpersonal apathy with empathy and interpersonal trust, and found out that the questionnaire of interpersonal apathy has good theoretical construct validity. Though the investigation of 706 college students, we explored present situation of student’s interpersonal apathy. Finally, we reached the results as follows:(1) Interpersonal apathy is consisted of “afraid of trouble” “return requirements” “ afraid of blackmail” “ bystander’s attitude” “ fear of failure” “ social sinister feeling ” and “lack of ability” theoretically.(2) Interpersonal apathy inventory for college students had good validity and reliability. This study accord with requires of metrology study and the inventory is competentto describe the situation of student’s interpersonal apathy.(3) The difference between men and women in interpersonal apathy is vague, needing further study. There was significant difference found between difference in home place. Students who live in cities have higher apathy than those who live in villages. The significant difference in “afraid of trouble” “return requirements” “afraid of blackmail” supports the current theoretical discussion that the time of social transformation influences the social interpersonal apathy behaviors. Whether someone is only child does not influence the interpersonal apathy.(4) Interpersonal apathy has non-relation to trait-empathy.(5) Interpersonal apathy has middle-relation to interpersonal trust. Interpersonal trust can predict the level of interpersonal apathy of college students reversely.
