Abandon The Han Dynasty Into The Song: Qing Confucianism Xia Jiong Academic Thinking

Xia Jiong(1795-1846) is a scholar who was born in Dangtu County,Anhui Province.He is the second son of Xia Luan.His elder brother is Xia Xin,a famous scholar of Han learning,and one of his younger brother is Xia Xie,an important historian in late imperial China.Like his father’s turn in learning,when he was young,Xia Jiong donated himself to Han learning under the directed of ChengYaotian,Wang Lai and Ling Tingkan and then turned to Song learning without any hesitation.He pointed out that Han learning is poisonous in both aspects of methodology and spirit and Xin learning which was founded by Lu Jiuyuan and Wang Yangming is as same as Han learning.According to Xia Jiong,only Song learning which emphasizes "three outline and five principle" that can save the degenerating world. It is very rare to see such a scholar in Qing Dynasty when Han learning was in any case the enemy of Song learning.This article will narrate Xia Jiong’s life and analyse his thought on the basic of textual research with the purpose of knowing more about Chinese scholars’thought at the eve of the Opium War.The author will make efforts to understand Xia Jiong’s strange behavior with reasonable sympathy.
