The study of teaching materials is a crucial part of the study of Teaching Chinese as the Second Language. As the development of teaching materials, the pictures gradually be widely used. Although there are increasing scholars paying more attention to picture, the relevant research is limited. These researches focused on how to use picture. The main function of pictures still is decoration. How to utilize pictures to facilitate Chinese teaching and to maximize the function of pictures, need to be analyzed and further explore.This essay selected pictures in Experiencing Chinese Oral Course 1-3 as the study object, using literature review, material analysis and questionnaire method to analyze the application of pictures. Based on the summary of the feature, gains and losses of applying pictures, this essay gives references and advices for the design of Chinese teaching materials in the future.This essay mainly is composed by four parts. The first part introduces the significance of this topic and summarizes the research statues; defines the notion of "functional pictures" and introduces the research methods. The second part studies on the quantity, types and function of the picture in Experiencing Chinese Oral Course 1-3. The third part researches on the teacher and the learner. The fourth part summarizes the feature of the picture and gives advices.
