Chieftain Lhatok was originated from Tang dynasty. His ancestor, Lhaga came to the land of Tibet along with Princess Wencheng as the wheeler of the wagon that carried the renowned Buddha Shayamuni’s statue. To praise this auspicious deed, King SongtsenGampo assigned him as the king who could lead all area of Domey. Later, King TrisongDetsen endowed the Lhatok leader of the day the title "the Heroic Tiger" and "The Lhatok King". With these titles, the later kings of Lhatok successfully extended their territory and became one of the strongest local forces in Chamdo.In 1374, for the purpose of managing the wide Tibetan area, the imperial court had included "The Lhatok King" in the system of the DokhamXingdu Conductor, which has had jurisdiction over 17 thousand-families units. Since then, "The Lhatok King" entered the history stage under the name of "Chieftain Lhatok". In 1729, Chieftain Lhatok was ranked and certificated with the royal seal by the Qing Government as the Anfu Si.This is the first thesis that studies the genealogy of Chieftain Lhatok. By thoroughly looking at two main Tibetan manuscripts recourses, The Lineage and History of Lhatok-its politics and religion and The History of Lhadoga Monastery, and analyzing over massive archives and materials, the author attempts to comprehensively discuss the origination and the falling of the Chieftain Lhatok’s linage.Apart from the preface and the epilogue, this thesis is consists of three parts:The first paragraph is the history of Chieftain Lhatok, It primarily describes the situation of Chieftain Lhatok in the nomads area. Then, the author clarifies the genealogy of Chieftain Lhatok by enumerating historical records and their ascendants’memoirs.The second paragraph is the origin and the development of Chieftain Lhatok, which is the main part of this thesis. The author describes the origin, development and the falling of the Chieftain Lhatok’s linage basing on manuscripts, oral history records and archives.The third paragraph is the system of Chieftain Lhatok. It presents chieftain Lhatok’s social statues by analyzing and summarizing its’ government organizations, religion and politic relations as well as economic situation.All in all, by combing the textual documents and documents from field trips, the author aims at thoroughly studying the Chieftain Lhatok with a historical anthropology perspective.
