A Study On The Church Schools In Qingdao During The Nanjing National Government

After the Opium War, many western missionaries came to China to do missionary work and education were one of the most efficient methods to spread the gospel. In 1897,Germany occupied Jiaozhou Bay and built Qingdao as its colonies. Many missionaries also followed the colonists to Qingdao and built the first modernised school in Qingdao. Even the Germans withdrew from Qingdao, but after more than ten years of development, the missionary school in Qingdao has begun to take shape. Under the stroke of the anti Christian movement,and the action to restore educational rights which developed in 1920 s, China government began to promote the work of registration about missionary schools. In the period of Nanjing National Government, the political situation is relatively stable. Christianity churches gradually accepted the request of the government and completed the registration work. In the curriculum, all the schools had opened the modern western scientific curriculum that Chinese most needed, and adjustment curriculum time according to government guidelines. In the style of management, more and more Chinese served as the school management, the government also had a part of the management rights, the church schools included in the Chinese educational system. In teaching content, every school offered English and Political classes, to adapt to the learning requirements of public and the ideological education requirements of government. During Nanjing national government’s reign, missionary schools had finally completed sinicize road. Even the school’s religious color increasingly diluted, but it satisfies the students’ requirements about practical knowledge. They have been recognized with the help of the government and have become an important part of modern education system in Qingdao. Of course, missionary schools’ original intention is to spread Christianity, but we can’t deny them spread of western culture and speed up the process of modernization in Qingdao. They had an important impact on the establishment of the modern education system in Qingdao.
