Language is not only the carrier of culture, but the essential tool in cultural communication. Chinese is the language which is spoken by the largest number of people in the world,it is also the six official languages for UN. Chinese international promotion is of great significance for raising the cultural soft power and competitive capability in present global multicultural development. No matter what is the purpose of people come to Lijiang, Chinese has become an important tool for the local language and culture communication, and teaching Chinese as a foreign language has developed after the reforming and opening policy was enacted, especially after 1997 when the recovery of Lijiang tourism industry. But the development status of teaching Chinese as a foreign language in Lijiang is far behind the provincial capital city Kunming due to a lot of special historical and realistic reasons, not to mention and compared with domestic developed regions. Chinese international promotion in Lijiang area is facing more and more opportunities and challenges when the state transformed teaching Chinese as a foreign language into the strategy of Chinese international promotion. How to seize the opportunities and to develop,expand Chinese international promotion is the issue that should be paid highly attention by the departments and universities concerned in Lijiang area. This paper reviews the top-down history and status of Chinese international promotion development from nation-wide to Lijiang area, through investigation and study of foreign students’ studying and living conditions as well as the main unit status of Chinese international promotion in Lijiang area, to identify the Lijiang area ’s strengths and weaknesses in Chinese international promotion, and put forward some recommendations and solutions related for existing problems, hoping to provide some valuable data,information through this study for facilitating the work of Chinese international promotion continued to be growing in Lijiang area.
