From Philosophy To Linguistics: An Interpretation Of Gongsun Longzi 's Thought

This paper mainly interprets the thought of Kung-Sun Lung in the aspects of philosophy and linguistics.Philosophically, the thought is analyzed in the aspect of Chinese philosophy, which can be divided into Philosophy of the pre-Qin period and Wang’s mind theory. Under the background of the discussion of the idea of Ming and Shi of the Chinese pre-qin philosophy, this paper think Kung-Sun Lung’s idea of Ming and shi is unique and advanced on some level. Firstly, he distinguished between Ming and Shi, Wu and Wei,which is different from the view of Ming and Shi of Confucius. Secondly, he discovered the source of the Ming, which is also considered as the source of human knowledge, just as Xun zi did. It reveals that human knowledge comes from people’s sensory perception of things. Thirdly, he found that the correspondence of Ming and Shi is rather unique.Comparing with Wang’s mind with Kung-Sun Lung’s philosophy, this paper discovered the similarity of "Wu" and "Shi" thought of Kung-sun Lung and the idea of "Xin and Li" of Wang, and the difference they had treating "Wu". In the part of Western Philosophy, this paper mainly discusses the characteristics of the intelligence and critical thinking of Kung-Sun Long’s philosophy, and the similarities of thought Kung-Sun Lung’s philosophy and modern linguistic philosophy.In the aspect of linguistics, this paper mainly interpret Kung-Sun Lung’s thought from the aspects of semantics and lexicology. In the aspect of semantics, this paper discuss the thought of semantic generation process of Kung-Sun Lung’s by paying special attention to the interpretation of "Zhi". This part also interpret the problem of "white horse is not horse" in the angle of semantics to illustrate that Kung-Sun Lung’s ideas are not the so-called sophism. In lexicology, this paper mainly interpret Kung-Sun Lung’s thought of the word from the aspects of the structure and integrity of the meaning of the word. In the aspecet of integrity, Firstly, Kung-Sun Lung considered that the single and double name need overall understanding. Single-name lost the meaning of independence once combined into complex. Secondly, the interpretation of "Er Wu Yi". Word is a entirety, any unit that compose the word can not separately represent the meaning of the word. In the aspect of the structure of the word, Kung-Sun Lung used examples of "bull" and "sheep" to illustrate the difference of relationship between language units of words has a certain influence on a certain word meaning and word structure.The final part concludes the important viewpoint of this paper, and also summarize the main opinion and research result as well as the shortcomings of this paper.
