Gugong Yan Linguistics Research

Sui and Tang Dynasty plays an important part in the history of Chinese academic and culture, Especially, the learned people emerged one after another. JIA Gong-yan was one of them in the early Tang Dynasty. There is a great deal of material in the history of Chinese linguistics. Tang Dynasty served as a link between past and future in it. JIA Gong-yan was a famous linguist. His theory and practice on linguistics dealt with a wide range. JIA Gong-yan's linguistics serves as a window open to the linguistic of Tang Dynasty. However, there are very few articles that studied on JIA Gong-yan's linguistics. It is really a pity with regard to understanding the overall picture of the linguistic studies in Tang Dynasty.JIA Gong-yan had no special works on linguistic theory, his linguistic theory mainly lied in Exegesis of the Zhou Li and Exegesis of the Yi Li. These thesis aims to sum up and make a summary of his linguistics through studying his works. The systematic study would just fill the gaps about JIA Gong-yan s linguistics.The linguistic achievements of Jia Gongyan had abundant content, but the materials about these achievements were fragmentary. So the important method of studying on the thesis relies mainly on the inductive method. JIA Gong-yan's linguistics is drawn out from his works through collecting and distinguishing the numerous scattered materials.JIA Gong-yan s linguistics shows in four aspects: Graphetics, Lexicology, Grammer and Rhetoric. The part one: Graphetics, It includes the research on the six categories of Chinese characters, the research on Chinese characters, the summation of the six kinds of the combined pattern of the pictographic element and the phonetic element. In the field of Lexicology: It included the research on the evolution of the words, the discrimination on the different name of the same things in different eras, the differentiation and the analysis of synonyms from different angles. The part three: Grammer. It includes the distinguishing the notional words from the function words, the annotation of the function words, the study on the temporary change of the wordclasses, the analysis on the syntax, the adjustment of the word order, the explanation of the structure of the article. The part four: Rhetoric. It includes the study on the function of the context, the study on the figures of speech, such as the Hu Wen, Dao Wen, Bian Wen, Bing Ti and so on.In a word, JIA Gong-yan's linguistics is comprehensive. Quite a lot of his studies has became a treasure where the descendant can draw the nutrition and bring forth the new ones. Though, there was no the systematic study about linguistics in JIA Gong-yan s works, But we can still understand the development and find the general ideas of linguistics of the Tang Dynasty through JIA Gong-yan s the linguistics. JIA Gong-yan s linguistics is one of the indispensable sections that make up the whole linguistics of the Tang Dynasty.
