Purpose:The purpose of this research is to study the stylistic characteristic and paraphrase the uncommon characters in clinical guidance part of Basic Theory & Clinical Guidance of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, fulfill phonetic notation, paraphrase in Chinese and English, translate, definite character root, mark the language phenomenon and to label meaning tags for the character, after which the association rules between character roots and meaning tags are analyzed, thus the law of uncommon character occurrence is concluded.Materials and methods:Basic Theory & Clinical Guidance of Acupuncture and Moxibustion collated and annotated by Huang Longxiang was taken as the study object. First, the location of uncommon characters was located under the macro computing in Microsoft Office 2013. Second, the phonetic notation, character rooting and paraphrasing were progressed mainly referring to On Characters,The Royal Dictionary, and The Origin of Language. Third, language phenomenon and meaning tags were marked and labeled according to contexts. Next, SPSS Clementine 12.0 and Microsoft Office Excel 2013 were applied to mine the association rules between character roots and meaning tags. Finally, the occurrence rules of uncommon characters in clinical guidance part of Basic Theory & Clinical Guidance of Acupuncture and Moxibustion was concluded.Results:1. 302 uncommon characters were located; the phonetic notation, Chinese & English paraphrasing and the translation was accomplished for located uncommon characters. 2. In the selected section, 51 character roots were identified. 8 categories of language phenomenon were included, such as interchangeablitily, reiterative diction(AA), extension, metaphor, metonymy, etc. The occurrence number of the identified 26 meaning tags was added up to 257. 3. The characters which carry the root category of body part, animal, plant and the root mal-(ç–') are regular in meaning labeling, while the characters labeled with acupoint name tags are irregular.Conclusion:1. The interpretation of uncommon characters includes phonetic notation, Chinese definition, English paraphrase, and translation. The importance of English paraphrase should not be neglected as it may lead to the misunderstandings of the translation. Therefore, relative reference books should have a basic pattern of ‘Pronunciation-Chinese Paraphase-English Paraphrase-Translation’. 2. In the selected section of the study object, uncommon characters usually carry a root about body structure. Interchangeable characters are commonly used. Also, such characters are offen classified as designation, which cover a wide range of objects. 3. In the selected section, on one hand, character meaning greatly depends on the root category. On the other hand, acupoint names originate from a wide range of roots.
