On Zhu Xi’ s Doctrine of”Investigation of Things”,when we are no longer confined to the “Investigation of Things”from macroscopic perspective to read the works of Zhu Xi, we will find Zhu Xi takes the”Investigation of Things”as the starting point to reach the Way and enter the field of sages. a man, according to Zhu Xi’s point of view, consists of the “principle” and the “material”(in Chinese Qi, literally,Gas, Air). And for this man, the “principle”becomes his or her “nature”,the “material”becomes body. The body, however, can contaminate the “nature” or the original”nature”.So as human being, we need cultivation to reform our body in order to return the original “nature”.What the “Investigation of Things”achieves the principle of things and attains the Way is very this cultivation. In other words,What the process of the “Investigation of Things”achieves the principle of things and attains the Way is also revealing ourselves “principle” and restoring ourselves original “nature”.The”Investigation of Things”' the Way( the realm of sages),by this analysis above, if we spend times and energies on the “ Investigation of Things”,we will acquire the Way and recover ourselves original “nature”,namely, we will enter the realm of sages. This is a road upward. If we not, on the contrary, we will not gain the Way and meanwhile not restore ourselves original “nature”.It means we will not go into the realm of sages and not be a sage, we will degenerate beasts and birds(non-human being). This is a road downward: we don’t expect by the “Investigation of Things”to restore ourselves original “nature”.Its a road of the degeneration of human being’s nature.
